The Centre for International Economics report for the HIA on taxation of housing was released on 12th March, available here

The CIE found the share of taxes, fees and charges across the states and territories in the cost of new houses was between 36% and 49% of their price and for apartments between 28% and 38%.

Sydney 49% 38%

Melbourne 43% 32%

Brisbane 41% 34%

Perth 36% 30%

Adelaide 37% 31%

Hobart 37% 33%

Canberra 47%. 28%

If governments get serious about housing affordability these costs will have to be reduced.
